UFC 1 In 1993 - What If This Alternate Timeline Happened....

I have been thinking about this question for some time now and its really got me pondering on the possiblites so wanted to see what everyone else here thinks. The scenario is that what if on the evening on Fri, 12 Nov 1993 at UFC 1 at McNichols Sports Arena, instead of Royce Gracie winning the tournament and solidifying BJJ as one of the most important foundations of modern mixed martial arts, we instead ended up with Butterbean winning? Yes Butterbean as in Eric David Scott Esch. Butterbean had his first boxing match in 1994 and first MMA fight in 2003, where he faced Genki Sudo in K1 and lost via Heel Hook. If Butterbean had actually won UFC 1 in 1993, then he would have started his MMA career earlier forgoing boxing and Genki Sudo might have known nothing about heel hooks as BJJ could have come to never take off in the way it did. I strongly argue the case because of this, Bean would have anhilated Sudo in 30 seconds, potenitally cementing himself as one of the greats on the mount Rushmore of MMA by the time he was done. We genuinely might have been having conversations on how he would have done against the likes of Aspinall, Ngannou or Jones. Really i wanted to get everyones view on how you guys think in modern day MMA would be different techinque wise if this timeline occured and what techinques do you think would have been vastly different if Bean Eshed his legacy in stone. How much different would the UFC also look as a brand? submitted by /u/ab5421 [link] [comments]
